The Palestinian Centre for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared has raised the alarm over Israel’s systematic clearing and hauling of rubble across the Gaza Strip, warning that the operation is crushing human remains and permanently erasing forensic evidence required to identify thousands of missing civilians.

Citing field documentation and reports by the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the Centre revealed that Israeli forces are unilaterally clearing hundreds of tons of debris daily within restricted military zones. Rather than conducting forensic recoveries, heavy machinery is pulverizing human remains and mixing them with waste and concrete, rendering future DNA identification nearly impossible for an estimated 4,000 and 5,000 of whom remain trapped beneath destroyed buildings.

The Centre stressed that these targeted areas cannot be dismissed as mere construction waste. Instead, they represent active crime scenes and temporary mass graves containing living evidence of genocide that must be preserved rather than bulldozed.

Destroying these remains constitutes a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 34 of Additional Protocol I, which strictly mandate that occupying powers respect the deceased, facilitate search operations, and allow families to reclaim their loved ones for dignified burial. Beyond the psychological torture inflicted on families trapped in uncertainty, the destruction of spatial landmarks intentionally obliterates evidence linked to enforced disappearances and summary executions.

Consequently, the Palestinian Centre for Missing Persons calls on the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene immediately to halt all rubble removal in affected zones. The international community must pressure Israel to grant forensic specialists, rescue crews, and independent investigators immediate access to map and recover bodies with full transparency.

The Centre further warned that private contractors assisting in these operations face direct legal exposure for complicity in war crimes. Ultimately, Israel’s attempts to bury its atrocities or haul the wreckage out of Gaza will never erase the truth documented by thousands of grieving families.
